Words to Think About - 7/21/06

Name the politician who, in an address July 2, stated:

"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason." Principles must be "accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all."Now, this is going to be difficult for some who believe in the inerrancy" of sacred scripture. "But in a pluralistic democracy, we have no choice. Politics depends on our ability to persuade each other of common aims based on a common reality. . . . At some fundamental level, religion does not allow for compromise. It's the art of the impossible. If God has spoken, then followers are expected to live up to God's edicts, regardless of the consequences. To base one's life on such uncompromising commitments may be sublime; to base our policymaking on such commitments would be a dangerous thing."

Was it:
a) Nancy Pelosi
b) Rick Santorum
c) Barack Obama
d) John McCain

Interesting quote. However, I wonder just how many religious beliefs CAN be translated into universal ideals. For instance, murder is wrong religiously. And in order for a society to thrive, we need to impede murder.

It would be interesting to really list out all the so called "religious" issues and put them in a culteral context.

Alright, I'll take a stab at this ...

No way it's McCain (not recently anyway). He's busy courting the Right as he sets himself up for the next presidential race.

Rick Santorum ... hmm, let me think abouNO FUCKING WAY.

So Nancy or Barack? Knowing what a Barack fan you are (oh our favorite-yet-least-experienced Democrat Senator), I'm guessing C. I'll reserve the slight possibility that it's Pelosi and you're secretly slighting me after my last post ... but I'm guessing she wouldn't take so hard a view since she's a bigshot and all.

Democrats hate God. Q.E.D.
